Aquatics for Athletes

Carson Palmer, starting quarterback of the Cincinatti Bengals isn’t the only professional athlete using aquatic therapy to heal stronger and faster. More than 30 professional sports teams and 40 collegiate teams including the Patriots, Lakers, and Diamondbacks use aquatic therapy and have therapy pools in their practice facilities. Aquatic therapy has become so popular among pro athletes that many are installing aquatic therapy pools in their homes. Why do athletes like aquatic therapy so much? Just ask, Lynda Huey, M.S. author of The Complete Waterpower Workout Book and trainer of many Olympic and professional athletes. Huey touts water as a safer, faster way to get back into shape after and injury. “Maybe our patients can’t run because of a bad knee or bad hip. We offer them a way to satisfy their workout craving — a safe way to stay in shape — and we teach them ways not to exacerbate their injuries.” Marion Kregeloh, PT, CFP and founder of Marin Movement Center likens workouts in water to magic. “Athletes that are burnt out from grueling land sessions are reinvigorated after a water workout.”, explains Kregeloh, adding “If they are injured and can’t bear weight well, they can maintain their fitness level without aggravating the injury. That’s what excites athletes.” In fact, the water adds a therapeutic benefit easing the pain while working out. “It’s a win-win for injured athletes and the public in general.” |
