How we integrate Pilates with physical therapy

Pilates is an excellent system for use in physical therapy.  It fits our philosophy of healing which revolves around re-educating our patients in their movement and holding patterns and helping them to take charge of their recovery and long-term health.  It also fits our belief in whole-body and whole-life health and fitness by increasing the mind/body connection.

Our therapists integrate Pilates into the physical therapy program.  The therapist leads patients through the exercises focusing on breathing and support from deep within the abdomen.  Utilizing apparatus and mat exercises, patients learn precise, controlled movements to lengthen and strengthen muscles of the entire body.  Patients develop a new way of standing and a more graceful way of moving.

The one-on-one interaction between patient and therapist yields incredible results.  The therapist, with immediate verbal, tactile and visual cues and feedback, monitors the patient’s entire body, maintaining alignment, correcting muscle activation and encouraging proper and safe rehabilitation.

The end result?  Patients that heal well, feel better and lead more active lives.

What is Pilates?

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest .“

— Joseph H. Pilates

Developed by German-born Joseph Pilates 90 years ago, this method uses the abdominals, lower back, and hips as the body’s powerhouse to improve strength, flexibility, posture, balance, and muscular symmetry.  Joseph Pilates created a rich and varied selection of over 500 motions designed to provide full-body wellbeing, strength and grace.  This series of controlled movements engaging patients’ body and mind is performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus or floor mats under close supervision of a certified Pilates physical therapist.  For 90 years, the lessons of Joseph Pilates have proven to be sound and effective, regardless of continually changing attitudes about body shape and fitness, or the emergence (and decline!) of exercise fads.

And that's not all.  Many students of Pilates claim they feel rejuvenated and refreshed after a session instead of drained and exhausted.  The Pilates method provides gentle, long term, noncompetitive physical conditioning.
